Precious changes from her first pregnancy at 12 to her second pregnancy at 16 by first realizing that school is her only way out of her mother’s house and the key to living on her own with her ch8ildren someday. She says, “[she] like school, but school never like her” She no longer lets Momma get in the way of her education even though she didn’t make her breakfast before she left and she risked her wrath for not telling her where she was going, Precious later talks about how she takes pride in the fact that she taught her second child his Abc’s so early. The next thing that changes from her first child to her second is that she understands that what her father did to her is called rape. She knew it was wrong from the very beginning however she never felt strong enough to stand up to him because of the trouble she thought she’d get in. Precious goes through her past once she gets to the half way house and begins to process everything that happened to her in her childhood. She exclaims, “I don’t hate no one” and struggles with her feelings for her father, “He give me the only good thing in my life aside from Ms. Rain Abc’s and girls at school Abdul come from him” although this makes her happy she knows, “He’s rape baby” and that there isn’t anything she can do to change the fact that she have her baby by her father. This still hurts her and she blames Momma for giving her to him. Along with the progress we see in Precious’s ability to process her past we also see her exhibit a new self worth, “I glad Precious Jones was born” and recognition of what brings her strength in her life, “Literacy award that is good proof to me I can do anything”. These changes would have been hard for anyone in her shoes to make in their lives after having such traumatic things happen to them and she was able to dig down deep inside of herself with the help of Ms. Rain and find strength to push through.
