The theme seen in this story is love. The love the mother has for her son. The love she had for her husband and the love she makes at night with the different men that come to be with her. It seems she needs these men to fill a void however it would make more sense if she was prostituting herself to buy necessities after her husband left, in order to support herself and her son. The gestures the mother makes after her son falls asleep are loving gestures such as when she explains “the way my son acts to my lips stroking his cheeks,” however this seems to be a way that selfishly “decides for me that he’s asleep.” This is love to protect his innocence, but she also doesn’t want to get caught. She should love her son enough to not do such things when he is sleeping right next to her especially if it is just for pleasure. It would be understandable if she was filing her void of love her husband once gave her and not receiving money for it. When she speaks of the women who “sit up through the night and undo patches of cloth that they have spent the whole day weaving” it makes me think of hardworking mothers who are using the material they have to keep their children and families clothed. They love their family so they make sure their clothing is perfect out of love. It could mean they have so little they need to undo patches and put them in different places as the children grow. The son sleeps in his Sunday best so it makes me think that they once had money when the father was around because he has nice clothes, however the mother could be lying about waiting for angels because alls he has is his Sunday best to wear to bed. He could wear nothing, but she probably does not want her son exposed to a lover if he happens to wake during their love making.
