“It took me years to learn the truth behind the lie” The author was always jealous of her sister’s beauty as a young girl. She did not understand however the trouble that the beauty her sister had would cause her. It wasn’t until they sat down to talk on her sister’s porch when they were older did she then learn the hurtful words Anne dealt with that came along with the smiles and compliments she received. This was her turn to learn her sister’s untold story. The sister talks about her bastard son and the readers see the similarities between Anne and their mother. During this story when the sisters speak of what their stepfather did to them it reminds me that beauty doesn’t matter to rape. Rape finds all and does not reject the ugly. We learn here when the author starts to tell her niece the a story that she used storytelling to escape and the only way she could escape the fiction was to tell the story of truth. The story she knew best and she couldn’t leave anything out which I believe was her point for writing this book. She finally made it out through truth. This is why I think this story is so helpful and encouraging because it shows people that the truth does set you free even if it causes pain along the way. By telling her story she has helped other people tell theirs. She made changes in her life creating a future full of happiness for herself. She was not subject to the endless circle that her mother was. She did not subject herself to the silence. “Telling the story all the way through is an act of love” She is loving herself and proving that she is worth something to herself and others around her that will read her story and share it with others. She has now validated her life through her story.
