I read this book for the first time a few months back and i just remember an overwhelming feeling of inspiration from Precious. No matter how hard people think they have it someone always has it worse. This young fighter who is impregnated twice by her father amazes the reader when she seeks happiness through education. I am happy she was able to confide in Ms. Rain, her teacher and that she could learn how to write to express herself and document the many events she experiences. I had to cringe when Precious recalls “then she kick me side of the face” and her mother calls her a “slut”. The reader sees early on the physical and emotional/verbal abuse this poor child has to endure. Precious is unable to receive the love and support from her parents that all growing children need to seek success for their pleasure and the pleasure it would bring her supporters. Due to this lack of love and support that those surround her provide she begins to look elsewhere.
Her search for love and a connection with a parental figure we see early on in the story when she tries to help out Mr. Wicher when the students misbehave during his math class. This continues with the nurses at the hospital when she delivers her babies. She is uncertain of who to turn to and who to trust for fear of losing them and their support. It made me happy to see her open up to someone like Ms. Rain after such disappointment other people brought to her life. Precious grows tremendously in this book and holds the reader’s attention and excitement from the beginning to the very end of her journey.
